You Smiled

It wasn’t one of those best moments. You weren’t wearing your smile. You were standing there. Just standing there. You looked me in the eye. I was torn seeing pictures in them. Pictures I would never wanna capture. Still, you stayed standing there with no movement at all.

You smiled. A smile I never saw before. But you remained standing there. I wished to cross that gap between us. I wish I could.

Music embraced the whole place. There were laughter, there were cheers. There were chants, people talking in chorus. I smiled, my eyes glued on you, as if we were the only individuals that matter. It wasn’t one of those best moments.

The bell rang, you walked. And as you did, the laughter and the cheers shattered. I was looking at you. You were looking at me, too. You were wearing that white dress you’ve long wanted to wear. On your hands were the flowers you arranged yourself. Your hair, tied up. Your make up, light. Everything was just on its right place, according to how you planned it, according to what you wanted.

You stepped. Looked around, saw familiar faces, smiled. Then you looked back to me. Smiled. Sighed. You took another step, bringing you closer to where I stand now. Your eyes never left mine. But your smile…

Three more steps… two… you slowed down. One… you smiled. Your eyes not leaving mine. As if telling me all of your night stories before we go to sleep. Your eyes not leaving mine. As if showing me all of those memories I was to keep. You smiled. I did, too. Then you passed me by.

Everything went down on me now. My eyes, still, glued on you. Wasn’t hearing anything. Everything seemed inaudible. Everything, blurred. It was only you I was seeing. Then you uttered I do. Everything came back. I lost you.

It wasn’t one of those best moments. You weren’t wearing your smile. You were standing there. Then you walked. Looked me in the eye. Your eyes not leaving mine. I was torn seeing pictures in them come to life. You smiled.

It was a goodbye not said. A conclusion implied. But it was the hardest of all goodbyes. You just walked, then you looked, you smiled.
